From Jean Vanier, Mission of L'Arche
I write for those of you who constitute a minority in L’Arche. I come from a Roman Catholic background and I love my church and am grateful to her, even though I can see many flaws in her. But I want to be open to others who have other gifts to give. I write to those of you who are Anglicans, Protestants, or Orthodox, who constitute quite a large minority in L’Arche. We are bonded together in the same love of Jesus and in his message of Love for the poor. I write for those of you who are Jewish, Hindu, Muslim or Buddhist. You are very special to my heart and I feel grateful to you. You constitute quite a small but important minority in L’Arche. Your presence is important. You open many of us to the millions who are of your religion. In this paper I sometimes use expressions which spring from my Christian background and gospel values. Excuse me if I do not use expressions familiar to you, springing from your traditions and holy books. I write also for those of you who have no religious affiliation or no specific faith. I want to thank you for being in L’Arche and I would hope that what I have to say may encourage you and bring you comfort and help you to follow your inner voice. I write wanting to respect each one of you in your inner journey. I yearn so much that we may all be one in a deep respect and love for one another, one in our love for our people who carry a mental handicap and one in our openness to receive from them the gifts of love and simplicity.
